Whether you are performing on a stage, in a board room, or just out socialising, your ability to connect with your audience is key. Contrary to logic an open heart is actually a protector. As there is always a little internal push back to the idea of the open heart let me begin with…..

What It is Not

It is not ignoring our instincts. The open heart enables us to feel fully and therefore it is a deep connection with instinct, enabling us to connect with others on a deeper level. Enabling us to isolate both friend and foe, specific threat levels, people we wish to engage with and people we are best choosing to leave for a time on their own journey.

It is not offering others the option of doormatting you. As soon as the heart opens it doesn’t completely negate all the wisdom and understanding you have in your head. Instead, your heart is able to connect with your mind so that your mind can process from a heartfelt place rather than just cold logic.

When I have been in tricky situations and have remembered to conduct myself with an open heart, I will find myself saying things that I may not have normally said but in retrospect they were the perfect things to say. I usually find out way down the track.

What it Does

The human heart produces the most powerful electromagnetic field in the body, which radiates outside the body and can interact with other people's heart fields. This connection, often referred to as energetic, emotional, or social, occurs when heart rhythms synchronize between individuals in close proximity or in a state of emotional connection.

Here is how the heart field connects with other hearts based on research:

  • Electromagnetic Radiation: The heart generates a strong, rhythmic electromagnetic field (60 times greater in amplitude than the brain's electrical activity) that radiates outward in all directions.

  • Heart Rate Synchronization: Research has demonstrated that individuals (such as couples or mother-infant dyads) can synchronize their heart rate, breathing, and physiological states, especially in times of stress or affection.

  • Role of Positive Emotions: Feelings of care, compassion, and appreciation can foster this connection, creating a "coherence" or harmony among people in a group.

  • Proximity and Interaction: Heart rhythms tend to synchronize when people are in close physical proximity. Studies show that shared, task-related stimuli (like working toward a common goal) can cause individuals to enter a similar mental state, inducing uniform heart rate patterns.

  • "Energetic" Communication: The heart is considered a generator of bioinformation. The field acts as a medium for detecting the emotional state of others through subtle energetic exchanges.

The Open Heart is the Best Performance

So when we have a deep desire to move hearts and minds with our performance, be that in life or on stage under a spotlight, the first place we must start is with ourselves and beginning to break down our fear of opening up into digestible parts, slowly, safely and carefully unfurling so that our beautiful voices and lives can touch the lives of those around us in a way that moves their hearts.
